Henderson Libraries will be closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 28th & Friday, November 29th
This talk, presented by John Bangert (retired US Naval Observatory, staff astronomer), will focus on eclipses of the Sun, especially the upcoming solar eclipses on October 14, 2023, and April 8, 2024 - both of which will be visible from the U.S. Explore why eclipses happen, the different types of solar eclipses, how to observe them safely, and what it's like to experience a total solar eclipse like the one that will happen next April. Also hear briefly about the impact of eclipses on ancient cultures.
John Bangert retired in 2013 after 34 years of federal service. Most of that time was spent at the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) in Washington, DC, where he served as a staff astronomer. From 1987 through 1998, he was responsible for the eclipse calculations that appeared in the national almanacs and in USNO's special eclipse publications. He served as the Head of USNO's Astronomical Applications Department from 1997 until retirement.
The West Henderson Library is located in the Bicentennial Marketplace (corner of Bicentennial Pkwy and Via Contessa). We are planning for a Summer 2022 grand opening.
