Adult CREATIVE writing & cover art ANTHOLOGY

The James I. Gibson Library is collecting writing and cover art submissions
for the Henderson Libraries' print anthology, Impressions.
The theme for 2017 is Freedom.

Submissions will be accepted from September 1, 2017 to November 30, 2017. 

All entries must be produced and submitted electronically.

Theme: Freedom

The concept of freedom is multi-faceted and can be explored through various viewpoints. The following are examples of how freedom is defined, according to Dictionary.com: 

Exempt from external control, interference, and regulation
Personal liberty as opposed to bondage or slavery
The absence or release from ties, obligations
Frankness of manner or speech
The right to frequent, enjoy, or use at will
Exempt from the presence of anything specified (freedom from fear)

Submission Guidelines

 
Creative Writing Submissions

  • Must be one of the first 75 entries received
  • Work must be based on the theme of Freedom
  • Entry can be a short story (3,000 words or less), poem (45 lines or less), or non-fiction piece (3,000 words or less)
  • Must be digitally-produced, double-spaced, and submitted electronically by email.
  • Must be an original, unpublished work (has not appeared in a book, journal, anthology, textbook, newsletter, newspaper, magazine, or any digital platform i.e. online forums, websites, social media)
  • The title must appear in the upper right corner of each page submitted, and page numbers must appear in the bottom right corner
  • A cover sheet is required for each entry that includes the following:
  • Author's name
  • Mailing address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Title of submission
  • Word count
  • Category (short story, poetry, non-fiction)

Up to two entries may be submitted per person
All submitted work should be "publication ready"

Cover Art Submissions

  • Art must be an original piece, created by the submitting artist
  • Work must be based on the theme of Freedom
  • Must be presented in an acceptable and tasteful manner
  • Size to be 6x9" in diameter; line work resolution to be 600dpi or higher, all other art forms to be 300dpi or higher
  • Must be submited in JPG or GIF format
  • A cover sheet is required for each entry that includes the following:
  • Author's name
  • Mailing address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Title of submission
  • Medium
  • Description of artwork (25 words or less)


Up to two entries may be submitted per person
All submitted work should be "publication ready"

What next...

Judging

  • All entries will be judged anonymously based on content, originality, and quality of expression
  • Judges' decisions are final

If selected

  • Writers and artists of top-ranking submissions will be asked to sign a licensing agreement which gives Henderson Libraries the right to publish and distribute selected work indefinitely
  • Authors and artists will retain copyright of their individual work
  • This anthology will provide local authors and artists the opportunity to build name recognition and readership through its presence in Henderson Libraries' collection

Publication

  • Top-ranking manuscripts and cover art submissions will be published in the anthology Impressions: Freedom
  • Cover images will be printed in color; all other selected images will be printed in black and white

Reception

  • Every author and artist who submitted work will receive an invitation to the reception which will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at the James I. Gibson Library
  • All artists and authors with work included in the anthology will receive a printed copy of the publication
