E komo mai! Join members of Hui Aloha 'Āina o Las Vegas (HAALV, Hawaiian Patriotic League of Las Vegas) for a discussion of the history of Lā Kū'oko'a, Independence Day in the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Lā Kū'oko'a, or Independence Day, is the most important holiday in the Hawaiian Kingdom. On November 28, 1843, the independence of the Hawaiian Kingdom was formally recognized by joint proclamation of Great Britain and France, making the sovereign archipelago the first non-Western member of the Family of Nations. The annual celebration continues throughout the Hawaiian Islands today.

Program will feature a short documentary film (The History of Hawai'i: An Uncomfortable Truth) and a presentation by Hawaiian Patriotic League of Las Vegas to provide a historical context and overview for understanding why this important celebration endures.

Event is part of Around the World at Henderson Libraries, a celebration of countries and cultures.
