Bruce Isaacson, Inaugural Poet Laureate of Clark County, will lead a discussion on the Beat poetry movement of the 1950s & ‘60s. Arguably the last movement of the arts to broadly impact western society, the Beats reinvented poetry to suit the modern experience. How did a movement in poetry end up at the heart of so many new ways of thinking? Bring your ideas and your glasses for reading and lively discussion!

Francois Villon might be considered the first Beat or ‘alternative’ poet. The English Romantics were themselves a key influence in what is known today as Beat Poetry, and we’ll talk about Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Byron, Keats and the endless enigma of William Blake.

This project is funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

In the 19th & early 20th century, poets like Whitman, Sandburg, Rimbaud, and Langston Hughes changed the entire concept and mission of American poetry. By the time Kenneth Rexroth set the table for the San Francisco Renaissance, America itself was chafing from the industrial era and changing towards new democratic ideals.

Synopsis
French Army Captain Antares Bonassieu and his squad are assigned to monitor a remote valley of Wakhan, Afghanistan on the border of Pakistan. Negotiating control of the region between local shepherds and possible Taliban sympathizers grows more and more tenuous for them as men from all sides start mysteriously disappearing. Unable to explain this eerie phenomenon, the soldiers find themselves embroiled in an existential nightmare, desperate for their own safety.

Pew reports that 66% of adults do not feel confident that activity records maintained by search engine providers will remain private and secure (May 2015). In addition, the 2016 presidential election has shed a spotlight on the growing number of fake news websites. At this session you will learn how Google tracks behavior and discover alternative search engines, such as DuckDuckGo. We will also identify ways to evaluate news sites to determine if they are reputable and credible.
